For the first time ever, Frank and I are planning a month-long vacation! And we have never been away from home for Thanksgiving before. The conversation began during the cold days of winter last year, when we were considering a cruise or a trip to someplace warm. We didn't want to miss the granddaughters' basketball seasons, so we settled on November of this year.
Back in 1968 I was a young college student studying one semester in Mexico City as part of a CWU group. My friends and I loved Mexico. While we visited several historical locations, our favorite weekend destination was Acapulco--hey, we were 21! I have often wished I'd visited
San Miguel de Allende, several hours to the northwest of Mexico City. Now Frank and I are heading there in just over a week! We leave Halloween day.We have booked an apartment in a building called La Ruina--the Ruin! It's over 200 years old (the entire city of San Miguel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Here is the link--we will be in Apartment 2.
There are other nearby towns which will provide side trips: Guanajuato (also a World Heritage Site) and Dolores Hidalgo (famous for it's Talavera Pottery). There are also botanical gardens, geothermal spas, and great shopping! Also just the beautiful ambiance and slower lifestyle of Old Mexico.
I've been brushing up on my Spanish, walking to get in shape for the steep cobblestone streets, and breathing deeply to prepare for the elevation--over 6000 ft.
Both Frank and I are ready for this adventure, and plan to do as much or as little as we feel like. I think it will be perfect for continuing my recovery from surgery last month and increasing our dose of Vitamin D.
I plan to post blogs from San Miguel occasionally. You can sign on to follow the
blog if you wish. That way I think you will get an email letting you know there's an update.Gayle
