Hola! This is our second day in beautiful San Miguel--the temperature is in the upper 70´s and the sky is pure azul! We are learning our way around town, and we have walked many miles as we take in the gorgeous sights and culture.
Our plane connections were good, but in the future we will try to avoid LAX. It´s never a good experience, and it´s a good thing we had 4 hours to navigate the maze and throngs of people. But we arrived at Leon on time and our driver met us promptly.
Although we had slept just a little on the flights, we donned our walking shoes and set out. As this
is a big week with All Hallow´s Eve and the Day of the Dead, a lot was going on. In the main square or jardin and in the churches people have set up displays to honor their dead with food, candles, and lots of sweets. Children dressed in costumes ask for coins in trick-or-treat fashion, and of course we complied. There were also music and performances in the square and lots of people. Very festive!
The number and beauty of old churches is amazing, and we attended mass yesterday in the largest, the Parroquea right on the square. After exploring a bit more we gave in to a lovely siesta which rejuvenated us.
One example of how limited language ability can take a funny turn: On a walk we spoke with a Mexican family on vacation from Monterrey. I tried to ask where we could buy groceries for our apartment. The woman misunderstood and had us follow us to her rental to talk with the manager. She told him we wanted to rent an apartment with a kitchen, etc. We all laughed and we eventually did find a little mercado to buy bananas, water, etc.
We´ve eaten very well, have found a little juice bar and breakfast place near our place, with reasonable prices. It seems if you go one block outside the main square the prices drop by several hundred pesos, and you can enjoy the authentic Mexico.
Hasta luego! Be sure to post comments or questions if you like.
